The Art of Track and Field

Art: provoking works produced through creative activity. (Bing Dictionary)

In track and field you run, jump, throw, each of these unique task are consider arts in my eyes. I am a member of the Penn State Track team. Each and everyday we dedicate a few hour of our lives trying to master and develop the skills necessary in order to become outstanding athletes. Normally people would think that if you are naturally talented then you will be successful but there is a lot of hard work, dedication and discipline needed in order to be the best. Track and field can be related to a smart high school student they don’t necessary need to study and they do what they need to do to get by but once they get to college they are just a small fish in a large pond.

In high school I set goals and it was easy to achieve them because I based my success off of my self-driven enthusiasm to be the best. Now I have entered a whole new ballpark. I have to take a few steps back in order to learn the proper technique needed to make the implements fly farther. Some believe that my success was based off of my strength and determination. But I think that it is more based off of the art with in the sport. Typical everyone thinks anyone can be a thrower or participate in track because it is “easy”. You have to be extremely quick and light on your feet. You have to be able to accelerate across the circle. In the other events you have to develop the mindset that know matter how far you have to run, jump, throw I will be the best. A successful track team is like a puzzle, everyone has to do there part in order for the puzzle to be complete. I believe the art is hidden within you.

Art and Cultural Opportunity

“Music : an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.” (Dictionary.com)

Immediately when I heard that MMG was coming to Penn State I realized that I was buying a ticket for one of my favorite groups! I am a huge fan! My friends decided to attend the concert with me, so they travelled to Penn State from there colleges as well as my home town! It was a perfect opportunity! I was able to attend a concert with my best friend and watch my favorite rappers perform live. Best of both worlds right?

On November 4, 2012 I attended the MMG concert. MMG stands for the Maybach music group. Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Machine Gun Kelly, and DJ Scream, all performed at the concert! It was truly so much fun! Everyone was dancing a screaming it was truly a blast!  The crowd went wild when each of the rapper entered the stage.Rick Ross wore a Penn State Jersey! Flames were playing on the large screen and it  repeatly played Maybach Music over and over again! Meek Mill ended up slipping on the stage because of a wet spot and they were all joking around and saying they are trying to kill us and someone should clean this up. This was by far the best three to four hours of my life. It was awesome because they played some of my favorite songs such as I’m A Boss, Am, Ambitious, and Amen. The tickets were cheap, and I was able to hang out with my friends. All of our voices were horse after the concert because we were screaming our heads off. I am so happy that I was provided with the opportunity to see such a remarkable performance!

Self Evaluation

1. First and for most I would like to say that English 15S was my favorite course this semester. I have learned many things throughout this semester. Many things such as how to develop a voice and express the relationship between my brother in my memoir and how to be a strong individual who is always on the look out for the arts that are among us. I learned that there are unique pieces of art throughout our campus. Also I learned the difference between pathos, logos and ethos. Ethos is based on creditability, pathos is the emotional appeal and logos are the reasoning aspect of the situation. I have learned to connect with an audience outside of the traditional stands. We also learned how to blog, and to attract an audience through color, format, and text. We also learned how to write a visual analysis, movie review, and a memoir. In the visual analysis we used pathos, logos and ethos in describing an ad. We attended a college flim weekend, which was awesome because we were able to go and watch something of our own choice. I went to watch Scream 2 because I love scary movies this was actually my first time watching this movie. I managed to skip in out of the series so this was such a perfect opportunity. We also learned how to decode advertisements. Meaning we can now look at them and figure out what the creator wants to appeal to us. Color, Style, Font, Text all has a huge impact on the ad also. We also travelled over to the beautiful Arboretum, which is located on the North side of our campus. We looked at the beauty of nature through the life of the plants. English 15S helped me to venture outside of my comfort and attack new experiences. We also attended the Palmer Museum and we had to interpret a picture that interests us. Toward the end of the course we were placed into groups and were to come up with a cultural exhibit. My group was awesome and I loved meeting with them as well as watching our fashion exhibit travel across time.
English 15S not only covered what was on the syllabus but it also helped me to develop pride in the community that I live in. As we adventured out we learned about many things that are surrounded around us. I feel like even though I have a little free time I always manage to get out to a few events her and their. Penn State provides it students with many things that can entertain the students. I am extremely happy that I took English 15S I learned many things about myself as well as the arts. We adventured out on many field trips throughout the semester and these events were definitely unforgettable. I am thankful that I was provided with the opportunity to take such an awesome course with such a great course with a stellar professor. I am sad that our time together is slowly coming to an end.

In the Red and Brown Water : By Tarell McCraney

The performance In Red and Brown Water was a story about a talented runner named Oya. Many obstacles were placed in her way in order to redirect her from achieving her dreams. She was offered a scholarship in order to run in college, but she declined the offer because she wanted to stay home and take care of her mother, who was extremely ill. Eventually time passed and her mother passed away. After her mother death it seemed like the little fire left in Oya died also. Symbolism is displayed many time throughout Oya life. For example when she is running her life seems to be on track but once she stops it all falls apart. She also falls in love with thing that she can’t have. She falls in love with an unfaithful man who is taken away from her because he is fighting in the war. Everything that Oya loves is taken away from her.

I think that the tribal music was the most compelling thing about the performance. The music played as the narrator of the story. By the different tempos you could almost predict what was going to happen next. The audience was aware of when something bad was about to happen. The music helped to build suspense throughout the play.

Oya decision making was the most compelling parts in the play. For example she invested her time in things that she couldn’t have. She fell in love with Shango who was actually unfaithful. He actually got another girl pregnant. I think that she was down so down for so long that she didn’t think that she could do any better. Many times throughout the performance we see that Oya looses hope. I think that once opportunity was there she wasn’t ready but when she was in need it didn’t come.

The only thing that I didn’t understand by watching this show was where exactly did this show take place. When I first saw it I thought maybe it was in Africa because of all the tribal music. Otherwise it was not that hard to follow.

This was not my first time seeing a live theater performance. This performance ended up being better than I thought. I felt like it kept the audiences attention and it was realistic. The performance shows that based on your decision obstacles in your life can change for the good or the bad. In Red and Brown Water it shows us that everything may go wrong at onetime but life goes on and it is your choice to recover or not. As long as you maintain hope there is always away.
